Research & development There are two principal areas of further expansion in Malawi:
Lake Malawi is one of the largest fresh water lakes in the world. At its peak production in the 1980s over 50,000 tonnes of fish were harvested a year. With over-fishing and other areas of lack of conservation this has now fallen to only 500 tonnes a year. Caged reared fish offers considerable opportunities, with local demand buying up all existing output and historically strong external markets, such as South Africa, keen to respond to any exports. In addition, aquaculture is the fastest converter of arable feed into protein and will therefore benefit from protein hungry people preferring a more cost effective fish meal to beef or poultry. The livestock beef herd of Malawi has disintegrated. Malawi now imports meat. We have introduced a 65 strong herd into Nkhozo farm and are looking at cross breeding to improve value. A strong internal market exists for meat output. | ||||
